  12. The following is a summary of the just-passed MUFON symposium held
  13. at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare Hotel, in Chicago.

  30. The 1991 MUFON Symposium, hosted by Illinois - MUFON, started out
  31. on Friday with a press conference of local and national reporters
  32. from newspapers and syndicated TV, with Walt Andrus as the
  33. primary speaker, at around 1:00 pm.
  34.  
  35. The "Get Acquainted" reception started at 6:00, with many in
  36. attendance, and lots of food/snacks spread on two huge tables in
  37. the large Rosemont ballroom of the hotel.  The majority of the
  38. guest speakers were there, as were many MUFON members and others
  39. who have an interest in UFOs or an aspect of the phenomena. This
  40. reception lasted until around 9:00 pm.  Friday was more or less a
  41. check-in day for those arriving from other locales.
  42.  
  43. Saturday was the start of the symposium, with the affair opening
  44. up with a welcome from Illinois - MUFON to all from Thomas
  45. Stults, State Director, and the acting "Master of Ceremonies",
  46. Forest Crawford, Assistant State Director.
  47.  
  48. (I won't include the actual times of the presentations, since
  49. they were covered in the MUFON Journal).

  51. Next were the speakers with their presentations:

  53. DENNIS STACY:
  54.  
  55. Dennis made a presentation concerning Crop Circles, going into
  56. the history of the phenomena, designs, associate phenomena such
  57. as luminous shapes and colors, animal reactions, high-pitched or
  58. humming sounds, electromagnetic interference effects, sensations
  59. of 'invisible' fields, etc., and the theory of possible
  60. intelligent development and/or communication.
  61.  
  62. ZECHARIA SITCHIN:
  63.  
  64. Zecharia's presentation focused on the theory of a connection
  65. between the writings in the bible as a sort of log of visitation
  66. of a civilization from another planet, the presence of a 12th
  67. planet, the connection between the number 12 and the ancient
  68. Greeks, bible, and findings from ancient cities such as Mesopot-
  69. amia, Assyria and Babylon, to name a few.

  71. MICHAEL D. SWORDS:
  72.  
  73. Michael's presentation concentrated on the hypothesis of
  74. extraterrestrial presence in the makeup of the UFO enigma,
  75. covering items such composition of meteorites, atmospheric makeup
  76. of other planets along the possibility of sustaining some type of
  77. 'life', biochemical occurrences, genetically/chromosomal
  78. possibilities, biophysical structures and E.T., and "what if"
  79. other forms of life are in existence.

  81. LINDA MOULTON HOWE:
  82.  
  83. Linda's presentation included a slide presentation of animal
  84. mutilations along with discussion of alien intervention of life
  85. forms on our planet, motives behind the abduction and mutilation
  86. of animals and humans, and touched on the roles of abductees/
  87. contactees and the communication they provide concerning the
  88. presence and motives of these intruders.

  90. JOHN A. ALTSHULER:
  91.  
  92. John's presentation also pertained to animal mutilations and the
  93. resultant tissue changes found over the last 24 years, in animals
  94. such as cattle, deer and rabbits.  He discusses the variants of
  95. tissue alterations associated with predation, cultist killings,
  96. accidental death, and that area of "other" which comprises much
  97. of what Linda and John are deeply involved in, alien intervention
  98. of life on this planet.

  100. JEAN-PIERRE PETIT:
  101.  
  102. This presentation focused on the recent UFO wave now occurring in
  103. Belgium, with thousands of witnesses, and one wave covering two
  104. days, November 29-30, 1989, which had over 900 cases of UFO
  105. sightings with the craft within 1000 feet of the witnesses in
  106. each instance.  Jean discussed radar observation of objects, F-
  107. 16's being out maneuvered by craft, although the aircraft had
  108. 'locked-on' to the target, a discussion of the propulsion
  109. techniques of UFOs, and the effect of air movement from a UFO as
  110. opposed to conventional craft.

  112. JOHN S. CARPENTER:
  113.  
  114. John's presentation focused on the clinical aspect of the
  115. abductee phenomena, what observations are required from the
  116. professional areas concerning diagnosing an abduction patient,
  117. what can be ruled out in efforts of ascertaining the actual
  118. causes of a patients trauma, the credibility factor of a patient,
  119. hoaxes, and the application of hypnosis as a tool for
  120. patient/doctor interaction.

  122. STANTON T. FRIEDMAN:
  123.  
  124. Stanton's discussion concentrated on new information obtained
  125. from 1989 onward concerning crashed craft, and touched on past
  126. history of information from various sources and the media
  127. representation of UFO information.  Also discussed was some of
  128. the 'behind-the-scenes' in the making of the documentaries "UFO
  129. Cover UP? Live", "UFOs Are Real" and the "Unsolved Mysteries"
  130. segments.  A brief discussion of William Moore and his past and
  131. present role in the scenario of investigations was included.

  133. COLIN ANDREWS:
  134.  
  135. Colin did not present a published paper for the symposium, yet
  136. offered a thrilling highlight to the proceedings when he showed a
  137. video, shot from a hillside by a couple in England, of a
  138. obviously metallic disk, approximately 6-10 inches in diameter,
  139. weaving in, out, over and thru a crop field in daylight,
  140. reflecting the sunlight as it maneuvered around the field,
  141. crossed over to another field, was witnessed also by a farmer on
  142. a tractor in the field, and lasted (on videotape) for 4-5
  143. minutes.  To say the least, this was amazing!  Colin also
  144. presented an audiotape of sounds originating as a crop circle was
  145. being formed, and discerning the presence of two distinct sounds,
  146. or notes, or pitches.

  148. MICHAEL CHOROST:
  149.  
  150. Michael's paper focused on the theory of the investigation of
  151. Crop Circles, ie., "Cereology", becoming a science and scientific
  152. pursuit onto itself, based on the variety and complexity of the
  153. information presently on hand concerning the formation of
  154. circles.  He concentrated on the formation of a 'structured'
  155. foundation of scientists and researchers allowing interaction of
  156. their knowledge and findings for all involved in the field.
  157. Discussed were the past and present state of the investigations
  158. and facts uncovered by many people and the complexity of the
  159. different shapes the circles are now taking.
  160.  
  161. C.B. SCOTT JONES:
  162.  
  163. This discussion focused on the government involvement in UFO
  164. information, suppression and dis-information, collaboration of
  165. other governments with the U.S. government in cover-ups and
  166. sharing of UFO-related informations and cases, and the analysis
  167. and problems in handling a actual piece of metal from a craft,
  168. and the findings found from the analysis, and the formation of an
  169. international exchange policy for sharing research.

  171. DAVID M. JACOBS:
  172.  
  173. Dr. Jacobs dissertation dealt with the clinical and psychological
  174. aspects of the abductee phenomenon, the separating of reality
  175. from imagination in the witnesses/patients, the complexity of
  176. hypnosis in ascertaining valid retrieval of information,
  177. abductee's accounts of their experiences, descriptions of aliens,
  178. conversations held with their captors, channeled communication,
  179. interpretation of alien thoughts, and the relationship of an
  180. abductee's experiences with objective reality and their
  181. perception of same.
  182.  
  183. GENE M. PHILLIPS:
  184.  
  185. This discussion concentrated on the "Plain of Nazca", located
  186. between the towns of Palpa and Nazca, in the province of Ica,
  187. approximately 300 miles south of Lima, Peru.  The presentation
  188. was basically a rebuttal to the Nova TV Program titled "The Case
  189. of the Ancient Astronauts", originally shown by Public
  190. Broadcasting Stations in 1978, and aired repeatedly thereafter.
  191. Mr. Phillips discussed the history of the findings at the Plain,
  192. and theorized at the reason for their existence.
  193.  
  194. BRUCE S. MACCABEE:
  195.  
  196. Dr. Maccabee presented the factual, overall picture of the
  197. experiences of those around Gulf Breeze, Florida, with it's over
  198. 260 UFO sightings since November 1987, which included perhaps
  199. three times as many witnesses. Ed Walters and his family had been
  200. involved in only a small fraction of those sightings, but because
  201. of the pictures taken by Ed, and the resultant publicity focused
  202. on him by the various media, the world associated Ed's
  203. experiences with all the happenings at Gulf breeze, when actually
  204. he was just "one of the many witnesses" involved.  Dr. Maccabee
  205. rectified this 'commercial image' of the Gulf Breeze experience
  206. by taking Ed Walters out of the picture and showed what has and
  207. is actually happening in the area.  Yes, Gulf breeze is real
  208. without "ED!"

  211. The symposium ended with a "Question and Answer" Panel composed
  212. of all speakers with Forest Crawford as Moderator, and an
  213. invitation for all to the 1992 MUFON International UFO Symposium
  214. to be held in Albuquerque, New Mexico, dates to be determined.
